The wisdom of the ages
So Kate Moss, the icon of the noughties, is showing signs of age – good for her! It is fascinating to observe the furore this causes. Yet again she is provoking discussion about interesting issues.
We are coming to accept age in a different way. The old rockers of the 60’s are challenging any assumption that it’s all over by 60! Yet the emphasis is primarily on how young they look, rather than valuing the wisdom and knowledge they might bring to the party.
Fast moving society lends itself to youth. Those who are up for a challenge and full of enthusiasm for something new are the ones who take us to the next step. Age carries experience of previous brave steps – some that went well and some that failed – which encourages some degree of caution. So it is right that youth holds the day, yet the older, and sometimes wiser, still have pearls to offer.
Vince Cable spoke of the Silver Panthers – the wise, feisty and aging, up to date with modern life, who can offer a different level of understanding to a problem. If we shift our thinking away from wrinkles and on to experience then we have the perfect scenario for bringing age and youth together – and don’t we just need that combination right now!
So keep going, Kate, your every wrinkle and line gives us pause for much needed thought!
